Integrated Coal Gasification and Carbon Capture Complex (ICGCCC)

Designation

Ultra Mega Project — Government of Maharashtra

New Era Cleantech is developing India’s most ambitious clean coal initiative. The Integrated Coal Gasification and Carbon Capture Complex will process coal into synthesis gas (syngas) — a versatile feedstock that can be converted into a wide range of high-value chemicals that India currently imports. The project simultaneously captures the CO₂ produced during the process, preventing it from entering the atmosphere and enabling India to honour its climate commitments without sacrificing industrial output or energy security.

The project is structured in two phases, allowing phased capital deployment, revenue generation and risk management across a carefully designed execution timeline.

Process & Technology

The heart of New Era’s complex is a proven industrial gasification process, adapted and optimised for Indian conditions and feedstock.

How It Works — Step by Step

RAW COAL FEED

High-grade coal from our captive mine at Bhadrawati (within 300 metres of the plant) and supplementary WCL linkage is fed into the gasifier together with oxygen and steam.

GASIFICATION

— Inside the gasifier, coal reacts at high temperatures and pressure to produce raw synthesis gas (syngas) — a mixture primarily of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H₂).

GAS CONDITIONING

The raw syngas passes through a Gas Processing Unit comprising: (a) Water Gas Shift (WGS) reactors, which adjust the CO-to-H₂ ratio for different downstream products, and (b) a CO₂ + H₂S Removal Unit, which cleans the gas and separates the carbon and sulphur streams.

CCUS

The separated CO₂ stream enters the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) sub-system. Depending on purity and commercial opportunity, CO₂ is directed to chemical utilisation, geological sequestration (basalt formations, saline aquifers) or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and enhanced coal bed methane recovery (ECBMR).

SULPHUR RECOVERY

H₂S-rich gas is processed through a Sulphur Recovery Unit, producing elemental sulphur as a marketable by-product.

DOWNSTREAM CONVERSION

The separated CO₂ stream enters the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) sub-system. Depending on purity and commercial opportunity, CO₂ is directed to chemical utilisation, geological sequestration (basalt formations, saline aquifers) or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and enhanced coal bed methane recovery (ECBMR).

Products Portfolio

New Era’s product portfolio has been designed to maximise value extraction from syngas while targeting products with strong domestic demand, import substitution potential and policy support. The complex is structured to produce both nitrogen-based fertilisers and methanol-chain chemicals, creating resilience across product cycles.

Phase 1 and 2 Products

MEG (Mono Ethylene Glycol)

A critical raw material for the polyester and PET industries. India is a major importer; domestic production from syngas represents a significant import substitution opportunity.

Synthetic Ethanol

Clean ethanol produced from syngas, suited for India's ethanol-blending programme and industrial applications.

Hydrogen

High-purity hydrogen for industrial use across refining, fertilisers and emerging clean energy applications.

Ammonium (Ammonia)

A primary feedstock for nitrogen fertilisers. Produced from syngas-derived hydrogen and atmospheric nitrogen.

Ammonium Nitrate

A high-nitrogen fertiliser and industrial explosive. Derived from the ammonium stream; serves both the agricultural and mining sectors.

Methanol

A versatile platform chemical and clean fuel. India's National Methanol Programme creates a growing policy-driven demand base.

DME (Dimethyl Ether)

A clean-burning fuel and chemical intermediate derived from methanol. Under active policy consideration as an LPG substitute and transport fuel.

Acetic Acid

A key industrial chemical used in the production of PET, fibres, adhesives and solvents. Currently largely imported.

By-Products

Elemental Sulphur

Recovered from the H₂S stream via the Sulphur Recovery Unit. Used in fertiliser, chemicals and tyre manufacturing.
